Correct Type of Contactor

Intermittent Duty Cycle Contactors
  • The electrical circuit for the starter is the only system requiring an intermittent duty cycle contactor because of the need for a quick and strong connection for starter engagement and quick disconnect after engine start.
  • The internal coil of an intermittent duty cycle contactor will overheat if installed in an electrical circuit requiring a continuous duty cycle contactor.
Continuous Duty Cycle Contactors
  • The battery, alternator, and external power all are systems that require continuous duty cycle contactors.
  • The internal components of a continuous duty cycle contactor have no heat build-up even when energized for hours.
  • The service-life of a continuous duty cycle contactor is significantly shortened if installed in an electrical circuit requiring an intermittent duty cycle contactor.
